-GUESS MY EMOTION-
Lesson Description
This class was the first since we finished our 5-day unit on creatures. It was refreshing to start something new and the kid’s also seemed ready for change. This class I introduced the idea that art can be used as a tool to communicate emotion. We explored multiple artists and contexts of artists using these elements to convey emotion. The students received an image of a facial expression that they used as inspiration to create a collage using color and line/shape that represented their emotion, resulting in layered and expressive artworks.

THE ART MAKING
Students view work by artists who emphasize color such as Sandy Skoglund and Mark Rothko. They respond with how the images and colors make them feel, like sad or angry. |

A student chooses red and green to represent her emotion: mad. She glues her colors to her collage in a pattern. She makes associations to a checkerboard and the alternating pattern it has. |
